Oh my goodness....I had never been on a jet ski before...and, when we approached the Narragansett Pier Dive Shop on Boon Street in Rhode Island, I was REALLY worried! Did it require any balance? Skill? Well, the answer, pretty much, is NO. The guys at the shop -- Charlie and Ed -- were really great. Charlie offered this advice: "Stop, go and don't hit anything!" So, when I saddled up and pressed the start button, I prepared to be brave...but, really, it was no sweat! The sensation of the steering apparatus was a bit strange at first...wiggly...but, after just a few minutes, I got the hang of it...and, honestly, I did NOT want to get off! Mike, my photographer, had some problem with his camera...so, I rode around Narragansett Bay by myself for almost an hour. That's the part I found really peaceful...the water was smooth...I was alone with my thoughts...it was totally divine. And then, when Mike jumped on the back of Charlie's jet ski to resume shooting the story again, we put the pedal to the metal and it was REALLY EXCITING! We zoomed all around...eventually ending up in Newport Harbor. I couldn't stop laughing...hitting the waves and soaring and splashing is such a rush...I never felt like I was going to tip over, though. I held my body very tautly (word?) the entire time...so, the next day, I was a bit stiff. But, all in all, I would recommend renting a jet ski to almost anyone...serious summer fun!
