Prince Harry exits Afghanistan after media mistake: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

It appears it was a mistake by an Australian women's magazine that was clueless about the circumstances surrounding Prince Harry's being sent to a war zone that led to the chain of events that has resulted in His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales being yanked out of Afghanistan by British military officials.

According to reports, the magazine New Idea, ran a story about his combat deployment in its January 15 edition because it didn't know there was an embargo on that information, essentially an agreement between the media and British authorities that the prince's assignment wouldn't be reported on out of fear that his own and his unit's security would be compromised.

The British Army's top general, Sir General Richard Danatt is seriously fuming over the breaking of the embargo, according to reports.

As Australia's Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Chief of the General Staff and professional head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, is furious the embargo has been broken.

"I am very disappointed that foreign websites have decided to run this story without consulting us," he said in a statement.

"This is in stark contrast to the highly-responsible attitude that the whole of the UK print and broadcast media, along with a small number of overseas, who have entered into an understanding with us over the coverage of Prince Harry on operations.

"After a lengthy period of discussion between the MoD and the editors of regional, national and international media, the editors took the commendable attitude to restrain their coverage," Dannatt said.

Now the story was out, the military would consider whether Harry's deployment should continue, he said, appealing to the media to restrain from reporting the prince's every move.
But in Sydney, New Idea denied knowingly breaking an embargo on the story.

"New Idea was not issued with a press embargo and was unaware of the existence of one," the magazine said in a statement.

"The story was published on Monday, January 7. Since then New Idea has received no comment from the British Ministry of Defence.

"We take these matters very seriously and would never knowingly break an embargo.

"We regret any issues the revelation of this story in America has caused today."

Embargoes are fairly commonplace when governments or companies want to provide information to journalists before they releas it to the public generally. They essentially ask journalists to keep the information secret from the public until a certain date and, often, even hour.

Typically, it allows the organization to not pre-empt its own press conference. It also lets reporters to do a lot of reporting in advance so that by the time the embargo is lifted, a well-reported story is ready to go.

More infrequently, embargoes are placed on stories for security reasons, such as when President Bush has gone to Iraq. The journalists who were made aware of the trips beforehand in order to accompany him were sworn to secrecy to protect the president.

Embargoes to protect the safety of the top government officials or a Prince Harry are well accepted in journalism. No sane reporter would ever seek to jeopardize the lives of people who are high-value targets.

But the case of Prince Harry reveals the problem with embargoes. They are only as strong as their weakest link.

In this case that was an Australian woman's publication that had no idea a pact existed to not report on the prince's deployment. Once a single news organization "breaks" the embargo, even unintentionally, it stays broken.

In this case, the German newspaper Bild, also published a Prince-Harry's-in-Afghanistan story yesterday. Then the Drudge Report picked it up. Matt Drudge gets credit for taking a story that had gotten little notice and making it go global.

But it was the accidental breaking of the embargo a month ago really precipitated the whole thing.

While I've never heard journalists debate whether embargoes should be honored in cases where human safety is concerned, there have long been debates about whether embargoes on stories where safety isn’t a consideration should be honored.

Some journalists don't like embargoes, precisely for the reason that if one organization doesn't, for whatever reason, play by the rules and violates the pact, everybody else is screwed. Some journalists also take the view that it's a way to let the government or companies dictate the timing on news. They believe that when we journalists learn of something, we owe it to the public to tell them sooner rather than later.

But embargoes are a fact of life in journalism. And so is the fact that sometimes, they blow up.

They ought to be ashamed of themselves. Loose lips sink ships... and put a young man who is serving his country in unnecessary danger.

Those "great" Americans do not really care who they put in harms way. The rabid Drudge report of the right claims no timetable because we let the enemy know our plans but they have no trouble telling the enemy where the prince is. Great Americans all.

We Americans know that the British have a long history of personal sacrifice by the Royal family. They have shown courage by being with the people sent in harm's way.

Steve

In a week (or possibly two) you will hear that I, Prince Harry, managed to resolve the issues over there with a combination of hard fighting and serious party action. Yep, those Taliban buggers just needed a swift kick up the arse, followed by a jolly good knees-up.

Honorable royal service, dishonorable media.

You would never know after reading this comment that you support whole heartedly the invasion of Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 or al-Qaeda. Hopefully the draft will be reinstated and you will see the light.

You're darn right I do, and if there is a draft, Jackson, they'll probably take you before they drag away my old bones. I'd pay to see that. You'd probably run to Canada with all the other cowards, though, right?

Also, Al Qaeda's in Iraq right now whether you'd believe it or not. The same way that radical Islam has been at war with the west for the past two decades whether you'd support an "invasion" of it or not.

I know Harry served well, but check out these clowns.

Jeff, when did your "old bones" serve?

Or were you too cowardly to join up?

If your going to accuse others, you better be ready to put up yourself.

reed,

The whole U-571 was a load of BS. If I recall it was a British destroyer that captured and recovered the Enigma machine. I purposely avoided the film, so I have no idea if it was any good.

It's like we in America have to steal someone else's glory. We have enough of our own for godsake. Give some credit where credit is due.

BTW, the Royal Family and whole British government was urged to rule from Canada during the dark days of 1940-41, but all refused.

If any good comes out of this debacle, it will be the end of Matt Drudge, boy reporter.

Is he really so clueless and irresponsible that he thinks it's a big joke to put an entire British unit at risk? Or does he think reality is just another video game, complete with reset button?

I commend the Prince for wanting to serve his country. However, it is probably too dangerous to have him serving in the field. If word of his location gets out to AQ/Taliban, his entire platoon would be in addtional danger, not to mention himself. There is no doubt in my mind that those savages would love to have him as a hostage.

Also, Al Qaeda's in Iraq right now whether you'd believe it or not. The same way that radical Islam has been at war with the west for the past two decades whether you'd support an "invasion" of it or not.

But it is Bush's failed policies that allowed them in Iraq. Why didn't your great exalted pooba Bush finish the job in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Now AlQaeda's reach is spread so far and our military spread so thin, AlQaeda is in a much better position than ever.

That will be Bush's legacy. He allowed the terrorist network to thrive, when he could have finished them.

Blimey!!

syj....This is a point missed by so many. The right loves to portray the dems as cowards, traitors, and America haters....but the republican president is the one that did not finish the job in Afghanistan and did a lousy job ( needless also ) in Iraq. These mindless fools have done nothing but make the mess worse. War on terror? What about the real war on terror...Afghanistan.

Good luck unlighting that match, syj. And Bush isn't my "great, exalted Poobah." You go on being mad about the past. See where that gets you. I'll deal with the present.

I'm not accusing anyone, Micahel. I'm just telling Jackson to be careful what he wishes for. He just might get it.

So you didn't serve,
Jeff?

I guess by your own definition you are a coward. Either that or a hypocrite.

You want to see one the great "TRUE" and heroic war stories ever. Just slide on down to our own Museum of Science and Industry. The U505 exhibit is phenominal!! The crew that captured that also got hold of an emigma.

Boy it's the same old arguments over and over. We should all know by now that Bush screwed up but he doesn't care and we should stop harping on it. We have bigger problems now thanks to him and we should be concentrating on voting for who best can deal with them in the future. I hate Bush with the best of them but that doesn't help us.

I can't believe with all the attacks you allow on everybody you would sensor me.

I guess it's OK, to out a Royal, and his military unit but censoring what I said.

I'd like to know why.

Stever34,

Many times my friend, many times. Every school field trip involved the MoSandIndustry and U505.

Though, I never understood why, back then, they had the Stuka, and slow dive bomber designed to attack undefended targets, diving in on the Brit Spitfire, a 400MPH+ air space dominator?!

Anyway, I also liked the fetus displays, and human cross sections, though it made me queasy, a bit. It was like a freak show in a scholarly setting. Early reality TV, ha ha.

Interesting (?) side note; an 8th grade friend of mine started a racial confrontation with a group of black kids in the museum! Idiot Hoosierville cracker. I had to negotiate.

P.S.

'Das Boot' is one of the best WWII films ever made.

Embargo needed to keep Prince
Harry from special attention
from the enemy?

It is a no brainer. I would
never want to have my life in the hands of the media.

On behalf of an embarrassed America, we extend our apologies to Prince Harry and the UK, particularly since those in our government, most involved in getting us stuck in Iraq in the first place, have not seen fit to encourage their own able-bodied slacker spawn..Harry's contemporaries..to even bother enlisting in the service of their country let alone on the front lines! it's a real sin that the Sludge Report had to "out" this brave young man. Like the article inferred, it's doubtful Al-Queda reads Australian fashion mags. Well Matt, anything for a buck. Sorry Harry..unlike yourself..a mere prince of the realm..Mitt Romney, Karl Rove and George Bush's kids are all too "special" to go. Jenna already told us that her "service" is best given in other ways..especially those where there's no risk of getting her fat behind shot off. Hey, that's just for the common folk in this country. Please..send MI-5 over to take away Matt Sludge and lock him up in the Tower forever more!

Hey, but we beat these people? Right? Why are they helping the Taliban? We need to kick them out of their now? THese libratarians never ceace to amaze.

correction;
make that loonie liberals.

Don't lump the other 300,000,000 + of us with the jerk(s) who broke the story.

"Those "great" Americans do not really care who they put in harms way."

Thanks for lumping my family and friends together with one irresponsible douchebag. Sterotyping is the easy way isn't it! Ironically, most of my ancestors are from England.

Terry,

That's what you and others do with the French. You lump them all together. And the Muslims.

I commend the Prince for his service--I only wish that we had a similar policy--any President who declares war or incites it, should they have children, that they be required to serve on active duty.
My son went, and I am proud of him for being in the National Guard and his willingness to step up and defend his country. However, a soldier and a gun are similar--they are tools of defense or misuse. This war is the latter. His unit should have been available to assist here in Katrina instead of "over there." It is not an issue of cowardice or bravery, it is an issue of our nation's priorities. I believe, and have stated so long before this fiasco began, that the invasion of Iraq was premature, and an attempt to identify a quick target for retribution for 9/11.
As for the press, it is a difficult balance between the public's right to know and the necessary discretion in a case such as this. As an attorney, the First Amendment is sacred to me, but as any right it has to be balanced with necessary discretion for security. ALways err on the side of saving life--reading about his deployment after it is over doesn't harm the public--reading about it while it occurs places many people at risk. I doubt anyone's security or feelings would have been hurt about hearing of his service AFTER it occurred instead of AS it was occurring. The result was that he was unable to do what he set out to do--to finish his obligation and what he felt was his duty as a future monarch.
