THE GARDEN SPOT FOR SAVINGS

At the Garden Barn in Vernon, customers seem to have a growing appetite for home grown food. According to Jennifer Valenti..more and more people are turning to vegetable gardens as a way of saving cash at the supermarket. The sheer variety of options is mind boggling..everything from the basics to the exotic. Tomatoes, lettuce, herbs..you name it...it can probably be found at the Garden Barn and at the fraction of the cost of your favorite store. One small tray of pickle plants is sold for $2.19 cents...yet it will yield enough cucumbers to feed your family and the neighbors all summer long!

GOING GREEN..THE RIGHT WAY
For those who are new to gardening...the Garden Barn has a friend...His name is Farmer Phil and he is ready to dig out a few handy tips:
* Locate your vegetable garden away from trees and shrubs that can rob your plants of moisture and sunlight
* Once your vegetables start to grow..keep plants, like tomatoes from laying on the ground. Use staking or cages to help and will make weeding easier
* Add a layer of mulch around the plants..this will help keep weeds down and decrease the amount of times you will need to water.
