Mind Your Manners

| | Comments (0)

real cover_opt.jpgProving that this adorable book on manners highlighted in today's Courant is effective, the little girl I passed the book along to has already sent me a thank-you note. (My boys did humor me by reading the book after I wrote about it, but its pink and purple book jacket looked out of place amid the dirty socks and Legos strewn about my house.)

If you've got a birthday party coming up and can't fathom buying yet another gift card (for a store that may or may not go out of business soon), "Merrilee Mannerly and Her Magnificent Manners" is a fine gift choice.

Oh, and you're welcome, Eliza.

If all this snow has everyone in your house falling victim to cabin fever, Hartford Courant reporter Crystal Maldonado has the perfect medicine for your family -- jump your sillies out at Canton's inflatable indoor playground, Jump!Zone. Read more...
Rose Farm website 055.jpgI just read an incredible story about Roses For Autism which inspired me to do a little research about this amazing endeavor in Guilford.

Roses for Autism is part of Growing Possibilities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving people with disabilities opportunities and independence in the business world.

You can support a wonderful cause and fulfill your Valentine's Day needs by checking out their beautiful locally grown blooms which can be ordered online or at local retailers.

Radio Flyer Celebrates American Heart Month!

We have heart disease in our family, so I am always on the lookout for healthy tips for kids.  Well, in honor of American Heart Month, the classic company Radio Flyer is offering a 15% sitewide discount on all products through the end of February.

According to the website "Let's Move", kids need sixty minutes of vigorous activity and play EACH day in order to stay healthy.  I have active boys...and that statistic surprised me. An hour a day is a lot!  Especially with all of this snow and ice on the ground.

"Madagascar Live" Is Traveling To Connecticut!!!

Ok, my boys think the "Madagascar" movies are hysterical.  (Honestly, I think they're kind of confusing.  More proof that kids may be sharper than adults.)

At any rate, my ears perked up at the news that a "Madagascar Live" show is coming to Wallingford's Oakdale Theatre in May.

The production just kicked off this week.

Have fun!  And, don't forget to "like" the Mommy Minute fan page on Facebook!

The Power of 10

coco_109 compress_opt.jpgKnow any kids turning 10 on 10/10/10? How about anyone turning 100?

CoCo Key Water Resort in Waterbury is offering free admission to guests celebrating their 10th or 100th birthday that day.

Although Waterbury might seem like a far away, strange land to many living in Greater Hartford, it's really not that far (or strange.) Our oldest son celebrated a birthday at the water park when it first opened a few years ago. From the perspective of a mom who would rather clean toilets than go to Chuck E. Cheese's, this place is actually pretty cool.

Free birthday admission on 10/10/10 is one of three "Perfect 10" deals CoCo Key will honor that day.  In addition, admission to the water park on Oct. 10 is just $10, and the park also will offer $10 arcade cards for only $5 the month of October.

Families unable to visit CoCo Key on Sunday, Oct. 10, can still enjoy a "Perfect 10" deal. All day passes purchased online on Oct. 10 are only $10 and can be redeemed on any selected date through Dec. 30, 2010.

The CoCo Key Water Resort is located at the Holiday Inn Waterbury, near the junction of Route 8 and I-84.  To purchase tickets or for more information visit www.cocokeywaterresort.com or call 877/875-5015.

hair raising_opt.jpgEven Justin needs a trim every now and then.

Families are invited to Hair Cuttery locations across New England on Sunday, September 26 from 5-8 p.m. to receive $10 haircuts with 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit Children's Hospital Boston.

All Connecticut Hair Cuttery locations will be participating in the event - including salons in Glastonbury, New Britain and Windsor. Click here for salon locations.

And click here for instructions on how to acheive the Bieber 'do.

The Hair Cuttery is working together with HAIRraising - an organization founded by stylist John Frieda that benefits children's hospitals worldwide - and offering the special rate in all 36 New England salon locations.

And for Pete's sake, get that hair out of your eyes.

OK...so we all have hard days. Crying, whining, tugging, pulling.  That's the bad stuff...but, even the fun activities can be completely draining. Constant whiffle ball, piggy backs and running up and down the road, holding the seat of the two wheeler.  Our days are long...and I know a lot of Moms look forward to that quiet glass of wine when the kids are in bed (this gal included).  So, here is a video that my friend put out on Facebook...I'm sharing it for your viewing pleasure (it's pretty funny) and also in case you're ever in a desperate situation without a corkscrew!

How to Open a Bottle of Wine With a Shoe

Also:  Sam, Ben and I did it. We ordered our new lunch boxes and backpacks for the upcoming school year.  This summer is flying!  Another friend put out a post about a new, hot lunchbox (can you believe I just wrote that?  Such a mom thing to say!) that is getting some attention in magazines such as Real Simple and Parenting.
